In November 2017, MCSO Victim Advocate Leticia Vela received a call for assistance from a stabbing victim who was paralyzed from the injuries he incurred during a crime.
She learned the incident was not an MCSO case, but without hesitation she still provided him with the case updates and offered him information on victim compensation. She helped him apply for medical, loss of wages, and disability available to those who have suffered a permanent disability due to a crime. For more than two years, she has continued to work with this victim- doing extensive research to check on the status of his compensation, updating him throughout the process.
Her efforts to help him get the compensation to which he’s entitled shows her dedication to not only this victim, but to everyone she meets. For her actions that go above and beyond, Leticia Vela is awarded the MCSO’s Employee of the Month for April.
