HR 218 Qualification



The Manatee County Sheriff's Office offers HR218 Pistol Qualification for qualified retired law enforcement officers.

  • Q: Who is eligible for H.R. 218/the “Law Enforcement Officers’ Safety Act”?
       A: You can research the LEOSA of 2004 and its amendments in 2010 and 2014 to see if you are eligible.
  • Q: Do I have to live in Manatee County?
       A: Yes, you must be a resident of Manatee County to participate.
  • Q: Where do I go for qualification?
       A: The range is located at the Manatee Gun and Archery Club at 1805 Logue Rd. Myakka City
  • Q: What day/time is the range open for qualification?
       A: Most Tuesdays and Wednesday from 8 am to 4 pm.  You do not have to schedule a time to qualify.
  • Q: What type of firearm is acceptable for qualification?
       A: A handgun capable of double action fire. (Striker fired weapons, Glock, Sig, etc. are acceptable)
  • Q: Do I need to bring my own ammunition?
       A: Yes. You will need 50 rounds to complete the course. Any currently produced ammunition is acceptable.
  • Q: What else do I need to bring?
       A: Eye and ear protection is available, but it is recommended that you bring your own. Prescription eyeglasses are acceptable.
  • Q: How many firearms am I allowed to bring?
       A: One firearm per person.
  • Q: Is a holster required?
       A: Yes, any holster that can be secured to your waist is acceptable.
  • Q: If my firearm fails to meet safety standards or I am disqualified, is there an appeal or grievance process?
       A: No. The Rangemaster or his designee has the final word on all range matters.
  • Q: Am I allowed to bring friends or relatives with me to watch?
       A: No, civilians not qualifying are not allowed at the gun range.
  • Q: After qualification, what will I get to show that I qualified?
       A: After receiving a passing score, the Firearms Instructor will issue you a State of Florida, CJSTC Firearms Proficiency Verification Card which is valid for one year from the qualification date listed.
